Robbers Roost offers rugged desert scenery, historic routes and miles of remote backcountry to explore. That isolation is part of the adventure—but it also makes careful preparation essential.
The Bureau of Land Management describes Robbers Roost as a highly isolated area with few developed facilities, a low chance of encountering other visitors and canyons that are not regularly patrolled. Cell service may also be unreliable.
Before heading out on an ATV or UTV, use this checklist to prepare for a safer and more enjoyable ride.
Water, Food and Sun Protection
Bring more water than you expect to use. Pack enough for everyone in your group, plus an emergency reserve in case a breakdown or wrong turn keeps you on the trail longer than planned.
You should also bring:
- High-energy snacks or a packed meal
- Sunscreen
- Sunglasses
- A brimmed hat
- Lip balm
- Lightweight layers
- A warm jacket for changing temperatures
Utah’s desert conditions can change quickly. Even when the day begins cool, exposed trails may become hot and sunny by afternoon.
Navigation and Communication
Do not depend entirely on cell service for directions. Download maps before leaving town and bring a paper trail map as a backup.
Consider packing:
- An offline GPS or mapping app
- A printed map
- A compass
- A fully charged phone
- A portable battery bank
- A satellite communicator or personal locator beacon
Before leaving, share your route and expected return time with someone who is not joining the ride. Robbers Roost contains miles of canyons and backcountry roads, and some access routes may be rough or deteriorated.
Safety Gear
Every rider should have appropriate protective equipment.
Pack:
- A properly fitted helmet
- Eye protection or goggles
- Gloves
- Long pants
- A long-sleeved shirt or riding jacket
- Over-the-ankle boots
- A basic first-aid kit
Utah requires properly fitted, fastened helmets for riders under 18 on certain types of OHVs on public land. State officials also recommend helmets, gloves, protective clothing and over-the-ankle boots for riders of all ages.
Drivers and passengers should follow the vehicle manufacturer’s seating and restraint instructions.
Vehicle and Recovery Equipment
Inspect your ATV or UTV before every trip. Check the tires, brakes, lights, fluids, battery and fuel level.
Your vehicle kit should include:
- A spare tire or tire repair kit
- Portable air compressor
- Basic tools
- Tow strap
- Recovery shackles
- Winch equipment, when applicable
- Jumper cables or a jump starter
- Extra fuel stored in an approved container
- Spare fuses
- Flashlight or headlamp
- Work gloves
Make sure your vehicle has functioning brakes, lights and a compliant muffler with an approved spark arrestor. Utah requires lights between sunset and sunrise.
A small mechanical problem can become a serious situation when you are many miles from services.
Registration and Required Documents
Carry your vehicle registration, permits and proof that each operator has completed the required Utah OHV education course.
Utah requires OHV operators—including adults—to complete an approved education course before operating on public land, roads or trails. Nonresident visitors must also meet Utah’s education and permit requirements.
Check current state requirements before your trip, especially when traveling from outside Utah.
Emergency Supplies
Prepare for the possibility that your group may need to remain with a disabled vehicle for several hours or overnight.
Useful emergency supplies include:
- Emergency blankets
- Fire extinguisher
- Whistle
- Signal mirror
- Waterproof matches or lighter
- Extra food and water
- Additional clothing
- Tarp or compact shelter
- Essential medications
Keep these supplies together in a waterproof container that remains secured inside the vehicle.
Protect the Trails
Pack trash bags so everything you bring onto the trail leaves with you. Stay on designated routes, avoid creating new tracks and leave historic objects where you find them.
Utah asks OHV riders to obey trail rules, respect other recreationists and operate responsibly to help protect continued access to public lands.
Check Before You Ride
Before leaving, review:
- The weather forecast
- Current trail and road conditions
- Fuel and water levels
- Your planned route
- Vehicle condition
- Emergency supplies
- Registration and education documents
Robbers Roost rewards prepared riders with remarkable scenery, historic landscapes and a true backcountry experience. Pack carefully, ride responsibly and give yourself enough time to enjoy the trail.
Prepare for the unexpected, respect the landscape and make your Robbers Roost adventure one to remember.
